A driving band is fixed around an artillery shell to stabilise it in flight: spinning it forward, sealing in the gas, maximising the damage on impact. Mass-manufactured, without sentiment. Here, one has been gilded, hinged, fitted with a working two-pronged catch, and engraved by hand with the initials F.K.
